If Only The Blue Skies Hung Around….
By Spencer

Saturday May 30th’s program started
as ideal as any race night. The rotating practices saw a bevy of cars take
to the track, with picturesque weather and track conditions. However, after
only one round of qualifying for our three divisions, the skies opened up
and washed out the night’s Fox’s Bakery and Deli sponsored program.
Though only half of qualifying was completed,
there was some terrific racing and budding rivalries developing throughout
each division.
The Mini Stock class has seen New Lowell, ON
driver Doug Butler dominate for the past 2 weeks, though on this week it was
Terry Clodd who appeared to be the driver to beat. Clodd started pole in his
qualifier and wasted no time skating out to a 4 car length lead, eventually
taking the win over blue-chipper Warren Paxton.
The Thunder Car division saw a 5-star battle
between two veterans and a rising star in its first qualifier. Week 2 winner
‘Flyin’ Frank Davey, Paul Maltese and one-time Mini Stock standout ‘Too
Quick’ Kenny Britt, treated the crowd to a battle that saw each driver take
possession of the lead at least once; With all three grooves of the race
track being used to their full potential. In the end, Davey found the bite
needed to out motor his counterparts for the heat win.
Late Model action saw 25-time provincial
champion Stompin’ Tom Walters return with his back-up car for the second
week in a row, as his primary car is not yet repaired after a practice crash
on opening night. Walters looked impressive regardless, finishing a strong
second to young veteran Jason ‘Bam Bam’ Witty. 2009 Sunset Speedway champion
‘Mr. Excitement’ Chris Morrow appeared to have shaken the mechanical
gremlins that have plagued his team since opening night, Morrow practiced
with the car Friday evening and again Saturday afternoon, reporting back
that he believed they had found and corrected the problem.
Due to the night’s racing
being ruled a complete rainout, rain-cheques held by fans are redeemable for
any regular night of racing on the 2009 Sunset Speedway schedule.
Make sure you’re in attendance next Saturday, as
the Canadian Vintage Modified tour comes to town with a big giveaway
promised for the youngsters. The Competition Fuels sponsored show gets
underway at 7:00 pm, with the Thunder Cars, Mini Stocks and Outlaw Mini
Stocks joining the CVM tour on the card.
