LETHBRIDGE,
ZACCHIGNA, CARTER FEATURE WINNERS
June
21, 2003 - Another fantastic night of racing is in the books, and
it delivered a new feature winner to the fans of Sunset Speedway.
Ron Lethbridge, running his first full season here this year, led
early and held off a hard charging Lambert Yake for his first feature
victory in the Late Model division. The relief of the win was obvious
on Ron's face, since a horrific wreck during the season opener left
him with an unrecognizable Grand Prix early in the season. Yake
turned in a stellar night as well, working his way from eighth and
seriously challenging Lethbridge for the win. Brendan Adams, Ron
Quesnelle and Vic Parsons completed the top five. Ken Bemrose couldn't
pull off a "birthday present" third feature for himself,
as he was caught up in an early wreck and had to settle for a hard
fought 11th.
In
the Thunder Cars, Mark Zacchigna capitalized on a sixth starting
position and pulled off his second feature in a row. It wasn't easy
though - for the last third of the race, Amanda Connolly, Doug Harvey
and Frank Davey hounded Zacchigna for top spot. Connolly just couldn't
get a good run on Zacchigna. Davey was able to grab third from Harvey,
otherwise that was the way they finished. Mark Adams got hung in
traffic, but was still able to check in for fifth.
Sunset's
newest race class, however, produced one of it's oldest winners
- wily veteran Jimmy Carter snagged the feature from deep in the
field. Carter trained his way forward behind Joe Sherman, then took
the lead about 1/3 of the way through and never looked back. Sherman
had a battle of his own, as he fought for second with Joey McColm
- Joey would prevail on the last lap. Aaron Martyn and Ted Edwards
grabbed fourth and fifth.
The
Plan Group was on hand to bring the action to us, and they had
many of their friends and family in attendance. We hope everyone
had a great time, and thanks to you for all your support over the
past years here at The Fastest Third Mile!
