Deasy
and Whittaker Wednesday Winners
July
9, 2003 - The air was a bit cool Wednesday night, but the racing
was far from it as Sunset Speedway hosted the first of two mid-week
invitational races. Sunset's own Bob Deasy swept the 4 Cylinder
division, with two heat wins and a convincing feature win. Last
Saturday, Deasy had some unexplained mechanical woes which ended
up being a terminal bottom end on his Import Racing Dynamics Honda
CRX. His team was hard at work over the last three days installing
a new motor, and those efforts paid off with tonight's wins - way
to go guys! Adam Tracey worked his way through traffic from sixth
place to get second, with James Rodgers, Bob Phinnemore and Albert
O'Neil finishing out the top five. 22 cars started the 4 Cylinder
50 lapper, with a number of cars from Barrie
Speedway. The best visitor was seventh place finishing Jim Suter
in a Volvo - yes, a Volvo. He hauled in from Varney.
In
the Thunder Car division, Barrie's Gord Shepherd dominated the better
part of the race from the fourth starting position. But, under one
of the late cautions, he pulled off with mechanical problems and
gave the win to Joe Whittaker. Whittaker had been one of the only
cars to keep up to Shepherd, but could never get closer than 3 or
4 car lengths. Shepherd's demise was just what Smokin' Joe needed.
Mark Zacchigna, after going to the back on a first lap altercation
with Andrew Cole, drove possessed all the way back up to the front
and gave Whittaker all he could handle for the last few laps - he
ended up second. Sauble's Brad Schmidt grabbed third on the last
lap, and our own Rob Poole and Amanda Connolly completed the top
five.
And last but not least, a Demolition Derby took place on the infield
with a bunch of cars from Gravenhurst Towing as well as some brave
"independants".
