Parsons, Davey, Deasy Feature Winners

July 20, 2003 - The racing on an ALSTAR night is usually exciting and eventful, and tonight's program was no exception. In the Limited Late Model division, Vic Parsons started ninth on the field and grabbed the lead on the last lap for his first feature win of the year. Brent Travis had led the entire event with no one seriously challenging him for the lead. But Parsons was on the move early, working through slower traffic and making his way to Travis' bumper with laps still to go. On the last lap, Travis slowed considerably going into turn 1 and Parsons zipped by for the win. Travis was able to get going again, and checked in for second. Father/son team Grant Lloyd and Simon Lloyd (who started seventh and sixth respectively) held on for third and fourth, while points leader Chris Morrow managed to work his way from the back for a fifth place finish. The other points contenders had mixed results - Ron Quesnelle was able to stay with Morrow through the race, and picked up sixth place. Ken Bemrose, however, did not fare well at all - he was involved in a wreck and went out early, finishing far back in the field.

Frank Davey, recovering from a broken transmission suffered in the Wednesday invitational of a week and a half ago, pulled off a solid run to the front for his second feature of the year. Davey started sixth and worked his way forward with Paul Maltese and Ernie Fumerton. Maltese led early and looked to have his first feature of the year sewn up, but the first caution gave Davey an opportunity to grab the lead. Maltese got stuck on the high side, and a number of cars got by as the race rolled on - Fumerton finished second. Doug Harvey, Mark Zacchigna and Mark Adams had a great battle going from the middle of the field, and ended up third, fourth and fifth. The race was not without incident, however - on the last lap, Andrew Cole swapped ends in turn 4 putting him in a precarious position in the middle of the corner. The field took the checkered flag, and Barrie driver Rob Morrison came around and plowed square into the rear of the Cole machine. Morrison exited his car and had an altercation with the still strapped in Cole. He received the black flag for his efforts.

Bob Deasy once again showed the strength of his Honda CRX rocketship in the 4 Cylinder class, capturing his third feature of the season. Deasy started 12th, and put on a great show with 3 and 4 wide racing through the first part of the race. Jimmy Carter started 13th and slid into the lead by the halfway point, but Deasy was on the move way up high on the track with intentions on the lead. The two drivers put on an incredible side-by-side battle, proving how much of a positive difference the sealer has made on the outside groove. This was a truly entertaining battle, lasting several laps. Carter checked in with second spot, followed by Tim Phinnemore, Dave Terry and Mike Carson. Carson's run was particularily impressive, as he started nearly at the back of the field. There were a number of cautions and hard hits, with one wreck involving Adam Tracey slamming side-on into a spun-out James Rodgers. Tracy lost a door, and Rodgers' car sufffered heavy damage to the side of his Mustang. Both were able to continue. Another incident involving John Cole spinning Brian Wilson in turn 1 was apparently perpetuated by an earlier altercation, in which Wilson's car rode up and over the side of the Cole Camaro causing heavy damage to the Cole car. Wilson was able to continue, Cole received the black flag for the spin.
