Davey and Deasy Wednesday Feature Winners

August 13, 2003 - Mother Nature gave us a break on Wednesday with an absolutely perfect night of weather. The action on the track was heating up too, as the Four Cylinders and Thunders hit the track with twin 50 Lap Invitationals. We had great car counts in both classes, with cars hauling in from Delaware, Varney, Peterborough, Sauble and Barrie.

Frank Davey snagged a hard fought feature in the Thunder Cars, starting eighth and patiently working forward through traffic as the dust settled on some hard racing up front. Davey's car was quick right from the get-go, but a pack of equally fast cars were in front of him. Brad Schmidt (from Sauble) started third and finished second in his stout Ford Crown Victoria - he was fast on the last invitational as well and led a good part of this race. Mark Zacchigna had a solid run from fifteenth to get third place, and Doug Harvey made an awesome run to fourth from eighteenth - his car hit the inside wall hard during an earlier heat, so kudos go out to Harvey and his crew for getting the car back up to race speed. CASCAR driver Kelly Williams came out to race with us, and managed a fifth place finish.

Bob Deasy has certainly proven that a Honda is the way to go in the Four Cylinder class - he grabbed his fifth consecutive feature race at Sunset, starting third and getting by two of the fastest cars for the lead. He was smooth all night, but a bout with lap traffic late in the race almost cost the victory. Tim Phinnemore started pole, but was no match for Deasy - he finished second. Phinnemore could stick with Deasy, but could not quite handle through the lap traffic as well. Varney driver Jim Suter had a great night up front for third, with Clarke Hartman (also a Varney car) in fourth and Joey McColm (Peterborough) in fifth.

We also had our largest Spectator Race to date, with a (literally) smokin' Z28 up against a Grand Prix for the final. The Tire Guys were on hand to sponsor tonight's event.
