Hat Trick Harvey, Tim Phinnemore and Easton Saturday Winners

August 30, 2003 - A great night of racing for our first event of this weekend's double header, as our Thunders and 4 Cylinders took to the track along with the Canadian Vintage Modifieds. Some great stories of sportsmanship developed through the night, and the competition on the track was fast and furious as the points nights wind down. We also had Ken Hayward turning hot laps in his freshly bodied Outlaw OSCAAR in preparation for tomorrow's Peterborough show - look for a few pictures of this impressive machine on our photo page when it is posted. A big thanks also goes out to Barrie Country Pine and Such for sponsoring a thoroughly entertaining night of racing.

In Thunder Cars, Doug Harvey pulled off the hat trick grabbing both his heats and the feature. He had a quick car right from the start and worked his way from sixth starting spot, taking the lead early with a daring three wide move to the bottom on John Carlisle and Ernie Fumerton. Once he got out front, Carlisle hooked up behind him and challenged for the lead several times culminating in a thrilling side-by-side finish. Carlisle would get second, with Fumerton hanging on to third. Frank Davey had a great run from tenth to get fourth and Tyler Liscum grabbed fifth in the 47 car. Liscum's finish was noteworthy - minutes before the start of the feature, the 47 team replaced the motor after it broke in the first heat. The other big story was the 45 team of Rob Poole, who replaced a transmission in a mere 30 minutes. Both drivers would like to thank the Phinnemore team for the loan of their equipment, as well as the drivers and crew that helped make these monumental equipment changes.

In the Four Cylinders, Tim Phinnemore started mid-pack and raced his way to the front to get the feature checkers. The big race was behind him, as Jimmy Carter did all he could to hold off the charge of the Bob Phinnemore machine, protecting the low side. They would finish second and third, with Mike Carson and Bob Deasy completing the top five.

The Canadian Vintage Modifieds made their first visit of the weekend, and what a feature it was. Ron Easton started outside pole and made a quick bid for the lead early. Brian Watson (the feature winner the last time the CVMs were at Sunset) worked his way forward from sixth starting spot, but could get no further forward than his second place finishing spot. Scott Fletcher finished third, with Gary Elliott and John Karley in fourth and fifth.
