Of course the main objective on any
race night is to win, and Adams did
just that. He grabbed five heat wins,
and earned a hard fought feature in
late August. This was a big win, with
points champion Frank Davey on his
tail for the better part of the race.
This was also a very popular win with
both the crowd and his fellow drivers.
One of Mark's best qualities has
to be his laid back attitude towards
race night. He is one of the smoothest
drivers on the track, one of the most
approachable in the pits, and one
of the first to lend a hand if a fellow
racer is in need. This non-aggressive
approach certainly had to contribute
to his overwhelming win as Sportsman
of the Year for 2003, and the huge
reception he received at the banquet
solidified this honour. After all,
this is an award that is voted on
by the drivers themselves - Mark would
like to thank his peers for this honour.
A contributing factor to his successful
year has to be his equipment. Adams
had the car ready to go every night,
not needing to "chase the setup"
between heats. "Not many changes
where made, adjusting tire pressures
etc." Mark explains. "All
preparation is done during off season."
As for his worst moment of the year,
the good news had to be that it came
at the end of the season and not the
beginning. On the 35th lap of the
Peterborough Speedway Autumn Colours
Classic feature, Adams crashed hard
on the front straight. This unfortunate
event wrote off his Monte Carlo after
9 years as his primary Thunder Car.
Mark's fans shouldn't worry though
- he is currently in the process of
building another Monte Carlo for Sunset's
2004 season.
But no driver can do it alone. Mark
would like to thank "Mom, Dad,
Barb and Greg (my crew members), my
crew and my very understanding wife
and family." No doubt 2004 will
be another solid season for this great
