WEEK 8 - BEMROSE WINS BACK TO BACK FEATURES

Last Saturday night we finally had the kind of weather we have been anticipating all season long - a warm sunny day with no rain in sight. It was fitting that it was Highland Chev-Olds Cadillac night and the Grant Kellough Memorial Night because the big fella made sure the weather was great on his evening. Grant was a lifelong employee, top salesman at Highland and was also the track announcer for 8 years. And a great job he did. Grant was larger than life and full of fun - always joking, telling stories, having a great time and always had time to say hello to people that wanted a bit of his time. We worked together in the tower all those years and I miss him on Saturday nights - I still think he will climb those stairs to the tower and once again announce an evening of racing at Sunset. I know you were looking down last Saturday making sure we were doing it right, we miss you, god bless and you are in our memories forever. The fine folks at Highland Chev-Olds Cadilac handed out hats and trophies to all the evenings' winners and we would like the relationship to continue well into the future.

The big winners on the night were #74 Mark Zacchigna (in the purple pavement eater) with a great display of driving in the thunder car division, #21 Bob Deasy as he held off one half of the Phinnemore wave to capture the 4 cylinder road runner feature, and the #3 machine of Ken Bemrose. He made it back to back feature wins and appears unstoppable as he appears as smooth as silk behind the wheel of the black Monte Carlo. Finally we were thoroughly entertained by 9 spectators from the stands racing in the spectator races. It came down to a run off between Herb Walters and Tim Phinnemore with Walters winning by an inch at the line in his Thunderbird.
THE LIMITED LATE MODEL DIVISION
There were 17 great looking Late Models ready for their 25 lap extravaganza. This race was completely up for grabs as the field was full of great drivers capable of winning on any particular night. On the drop of the green flag, the 97 machine of Simon Lloyd grabbed the lead with #95 Ron Lethbridge, #67 Rick Santigato, #104 of John Mombourquette and #52 Mark Gordon in pursuit. Caution on lap 3 as #1 Vic Parsons goes for the wild ride down the front chute. On the restart Lloyd maintains the point while Lethbridge, Mombourquette, #87 Grant Lloyd and #3 Ken Bemrose round out the top 5. At the half way point, Lethbridge wrestled the lead away from Lloyd by powering under the 97 car while Bemrose was on the move grabbing third from Mombourquette. #57 Ron Quesnelle battled Grant Lloyd for fifth. Bemrose was on a rail this night and sped under Lethbridge to take the point - he was definitely the fastest car on the track. With Bemrose home and cooled out there was a great battle in behind for the remaining positions - Lethbridge was second, and Quesnelle and #22 Chris Morrow both managed to get around Simon Lloyd. As they thundered down the front chute to take the checkered flag from the starter the top 5 was Bemrose for the second week in a row, Lethbridge, Quesnelle, Morrow and Simon Lloyd. The heat winners were Simon Lloyd, #52 Mark Gordon, Quesnelle and Bemrose. Congratulations to Ken, Judy and the crew on consecutive feature wins, not an easy feat in the talent laden Limited Late Model division at Sunset Speedway. It was nice to see the 95 car have a nice run - this should be the start of a great run for Ron and the crew the rest of the season.
THUNDER CAR DIVISION
As 16 thunder cars rolled onto the asphalt for their 25 lap feature, the car to beat seemed to be the 74 car of Mark Zacchigna as he won a heat and was starting near the front. On the drop of the green flag #67 Rick Santigato took the early lead with #60 Mike Norris, Zacchigna, #06 Gord Matt and #72 Roy Anderson in hot pursuit. Zacchigna wasted little time grabbing the point and sped away from the field. After a number of cautions Zacchigna still held the point, but #7 Smokin' Joe Whittaker was in pursuit and the #49 rocket of Frank Davey also wanted to reel in the 74 car. At the half way point Zacchigna held a healthy lead but Whittaker and Davey were gaining each and every lap. #3 Ernie Fumerton and #16 Amanda Connolly rounded out the top 5. The top 3 were in a class of their own on this night and soon both Whittaker and Davey were sandwiching Mr. Zacchigna. With laps winding down Whittaker tried the high side, Davey went low - Whittaker seemed to have low side but with great driving ability and some luck Mark managed to hold off the wolves from the door. But if the race was 1 lap longer I'm not so sure. The finish at the checkered flag was Zacchigna, Whittaker, Davey, Fumerton and #51 Mark Adams - well done guys as that was great, crowd pleasing racing. The heat winners were Zacchigna, Fumerton and Davey with 2. Congratulations to Mark and the crew on a great feature victory and if I know Mark it certainly will not be his last for 2003.
4 CYLINDER ROAD RUNNER DIVISION
There were seventeen 4 cylinder cars eager to take the green flag on their 25 lap adventure - this division puts on a great show each and every time out. On the drop of the green #26 Ted Edwards grabbed the early lead with the 54 car of Edward Cole, #12 Adam Tracey, #21 Rob Deasy and #00 John Cole occupying the top 5 spots. On lap 4, Tracey got looped by Edward Cole - Cole received the black flag for his efforts. On the restart, Deasy powered to the front while #80 Jim Carter, #88 James Rodgers and the Phinnemore wave entered the fray. At the half way point Deasy still held the point while Rodgers and Carter go door handle to door handle. Bob Phinnemore and Tim Phinnemore lurked like sharks. The top 5 were in a tremendous battle. Deasy held a comfortable lead, but in behind paint was being traded as Bob Phinnemore battled Carter for second and there was a great battle going on between Rodgers and Tim Phinnemore. Tracey had also joined the fray from the rear. As they motored down the front chute to take the checkered flag, Deasy held off Bob Phinnemore, while in behind it was Carter, Rodgers and Tracey. It was a great run for #12 Adam Tracey as he was sent to the back from an early incident and managed a fifth place finish - well done Adam. The heat winners were Tracey, Deasy, Tim Phinnemore and Bob Phinnemore. Congratulations to Rob and the crew on a great feature win - the CRX is rocking and rolling finally.
