Event 19 - DAVEY AND DEASY PREVAIL ON WEDNESDAY SPECIAL

On Wednesday August 13th we had a special event at Sunset Speedway as track owner Glenn Lloyd offered a 1/2/price race night that was a fan appreciation night to thank the regular fans with an affordable night of racing for the family. Glenn deservers a great deal of credit for offering a great night of racing for an affordable price for the entire family. The night’s entertainment was an invitational for 4 cylinders and thunder cars as well as spectator races. The night’s sponsor was The Tire Guys and they handed out trophies to all the night’s winners. The big winners for the night were #49 Flyin’ Frank Davey in the thunder car 50 lap race and #21 Rob Deasy in the yellow Honda CRX that prevailed in the 50 lap 4 cylinder event. We were extremely honoured on this night as we had a former CASCAR veteran and Champ car pace car driver Kelly Williams in attendance running in the thunder car event.

As the 24 cars pulled onto the track to take the green flag for the 50 lap feature there were a number of cars that could win the 50 lap race as there was a great field of cars. On the drop of the green the front row was wiped out as #23 Paul Maltese and #16 Amanda Connelly made contact with Connelly retied to the pits and Maltese summoned to the rear. On the restart #24 Brad Schmidt grabbed the early lead in a Ford Crown Victoria from Sauble Speedway and was extremely quick while in behind #8 John Carlisle, #7 Smokin’ Joe Whitaker, #13 Brad Collison from Delaware Speedway and #3 Ernie Fummerton were the fast 5. As the laps rolled on Schmidt held the point but the car to beat was the 10 car of Gord Sheppard who moved onto the back bumper of the 24 car while Carlisle, Whitaker and Collison rounded out the top 5. On lap 8 Sheppard inherited the lead and would be difficult to beat as he sped away from Schmidt who was a distance from Carlisle, Whitaker and Collison. As the laps ticked away there was Sheppard and then the rest he was that dominant as Schmidt held the runner up spot but #49 Flyin’ Frank Davey had moved to back bumper of Schmidt and was extremely quick while Whitaker and #31 Kelly Williams round out the top 5. With Sheppard home and cooled out disaster fell him as he slowed to a crawl down the back chute on lap 30 and was through for the night. On the restart Schmidt inherited the lead while in behind Davey, Whitaker, Williams and #74 Mark Zacchigna round the top 5. Davey was definitely the fastest car on the track and wasted little time taking the lead from Schmidt while Williams lurked in third and Zacchigna and Carlisle round out the top 5. With Davey well in front there was a great battle in behind as Schmidt was second while Zacchigna was in a great battle with Williams with #94 Doug Harveyand #45 Rob Poole were battling for position. As they roared down the front chute to take the checkered flag the running order was Davey, Schmidt, Zacchigna, Harvey, Williams and Poole. The heat winners were Davey, Collison, Schmidt and Sheppard. It was tremendous to see a great field of cars on hand and the future bodes well for racing at Sunset Speedway for the future.

THE 4 CYLINDER 50 LAP INVITATIONAL EVENT

We had 24 cars take the green flag for the 4 cylinder feature and any number of 10 cars could take home the win. On the drop of the green flag #22 Tim Phinnemore grabbed the early lead with #21 Rob Deasy, #22.2 Bob Phinnemore, #33 Jim Suter and #19 Dave Marco round out the top 5. Deasy wasted little time in taking the point while Phinnemore was runner up and in behind Suter, #5 Clarke Hartman and #80 Dean Jackson were fighting for position. At the half way point Deasy was home and cooled out while Phinnemore was second and in behind was Suter, #51 Joey McColm and Jackson were jostling for position. As they roared down the front chute to take the checkered flag the running order was Deasy, Phinnemore, Suter, Hartman, McColm, Jackson and #90 Darren Lloyd. The hard charger award goes to the #90 Rabbit of Darren Lloyd as moved from the last starting position to finish a very respectable 7th. The heat winners were Deasy, Marco, Mc Colm and #9 Mike Carson.
