Cars & Stars
Velocity 250 2013

Velocity 250 2013 will be remembered as one of the most intense 2 days of action ever experienced, with a record of 236 cars involved.

Day 1: Fans began arriving early to watch the different cars do their practice laps, and find seats, as once the day officially started, the stands were packed with families and racing fans.

Spencer Lewis welcomed Canadian Country Star “Jason McCoy”, our special guest, to start the weekend for us by singing the anthems. He received a standing ovation from the fans in the stands, and with that Spencer announced the first group of cars onto the track to start our day, while Jason talked with fans, and enjoyed the racing.

With 7 different divisions, and over 200 cars involved in heat after heat of competitive action, we watched as one group drove off, replaced by the next group. The excitement built up as the track warmed up to the burning tires and thrusts of power by drivers from all over Ontario, starting with Late Models and a collision on corner one. It ended the weekend for #29 the “Frequent Flyer “Sean Grosman. From there it was one division after another, each trying to qualify for the feature races.

Our first day we had so many heat races in all divisions we lost count, as we wound down to the feature races for the Canadian Vintage Modifieds, with #6 Adrian Donkers taking the Chequered flag.

In the Pro Challenge Series, # 88 Tim Norris took the Chequered flag, after an action, and yellow flags packed feature race.

The feature for the Hurricane Midgets was intense, as we watched # 83 Jamie Bond take his first Chequered Flag at Sunset Speedway, with anticipation of their next visit.

We were entertained by over 200 cars, in Late Models, Super Stock, Mini Stock, OSCAAR Modifieds, Canadian Vintage Modifieds, and the Pro Challenge Series, as well as the Hurricane Midgets in their first visit. We were entertained to all this action in one day, shared by race fans and families.

Velocity 250 2013 Day 2: Fans arriving over 2 hours in advance, as they wanted to see the practice laps for the final Feature Races.

We were welcomed by our special guest from her Family Channel Big Ticket Summer Concert Tour “Veronica”, as she sang the Anthem, and dropped the green flag to start the days racing. Veronica stayed to sign autographs and take pictures with fans. She took the opportunity to visit the pits and sign a few hoods on competing cars, as well as take pictures with her fans, such as Mini Stock drivers #2 Kendra Adams, and # 28 Morgan “The Wheelman” Robson.

Our 2nd day began with the introduction of the OSCAAR Super Late Models, as we were entertained with the Qualifying heat races for the feature races of 50 Laps. The OSCAAR Modifieds ran their Last Chance, and 30 Lap Feature.

Our Late Models had drivers from all over Ontario competing in their Last Chance qualifying heats for their 75 Lap Feature, and the Super Stock last chance and 50 Lap Feature, and finally our Mini Stock Last Chance and 30 Lap Feature.

The excitement was built with “Spencer Lewis” sharing his insights to every driver on the track. He knows so much about all the visiting drivers as well as our own cast of regular drivers, that he kept the tempo moving throughout the races.

Our Weekend Racing ended with Late Model driver # 47 “Stompin” Tom Walters, with numerous Championships from Sunset Speedway, qualifying and winning the 75 Lap Late Model Feature Race. The evening prior to the race Tom was inducted to the “19th Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame”, making him the only member still competing.

30-time champion Stompin' Tom Walters missed Velocity 250 qualifying due to a pressing engagement at the Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony - and was forced to race his way into the 75-lap A Main on Sunday via a last chance qualifier. Starting deep in the field, Walters still managed to maneuver his way past 25 other challengers, taking the lead shortly before the halfway mark and holding on for the 2013 Velocity 250 victory.

We watched as the 50 Lap Super Stock Feature Race was won by Sunset Speedways Super Stock Champion #72 Randy “the Rocket” Rusnell.

For our 30 Lap Mini Stock Feature Race was won by #53 Brad Martin, a regular Mini Stock Driver from Kawartha Speedway.

For the OSCAAR Modifieds #8 Gary McClean won the 30 Lap OSCAAR Modified Feature Race.

excerpt from OntarioOval.com .. Stroud, ON – Gary McLean (No.8 McLean Industrial Design) claimed his 10th career Rick Woolner Memorial win on Sunday afternoon, but the first at Sunset Speedway.

The event, which honours the late Rick Woolner who passed away in 1999 from lung cancer, is traditionally held at Varney Speedway Motorplex, but after the event was rained out on September 15, it was moved to Sunset.

Over our Velocity 250 Weekend, Fans were entertained by a grand total of 236 cars, in 8 different divisions, with continuous racing for the 2 days, making it a new record, for any track.

We had so many cars competing that we had to designate parking areas for temporary pads for visiting drivers. Our camping area was packed by racers and fans, as they made this a weekend event of the excitement.

Camp Bucko

We were fortunate to have the Innisfil Fire Fighters raise money and awareness for a very good cause “Camp Bucko”. Each year Sunset Speedway works with various local charities to help them raise money and awareness, all done by volunteers, as we are all exposed to the need for the services they provide.

Our next season promises to be filled with action, as we start our 2014 season on May 3rd. Come and see why we have had over 1.6 million fans visit us. Make it a family adventure to “Innisfils Biggest Family Attraction” where the Action is the Attraction, and remember kids 11 and under are free.
