GUELPH, ON – Through three seasons of Open Wheel Modified racing, TJ Edwards’ sole focus has been touring across Ontario – tackling a different speedway every week. However, in 2023, Edwards will take a significantly different approach to full-time competition.
This season, Edwards will race fulltime at Sunset under the NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series banner, chasing the inaugural Open Wheel Modified championship alongside a laundry list of some of Ontario’s best.
“It’s going to be a bit different not having to change our car from one week to the next,” offers Edwards. “Competing weekly gives us a chance to find the setup that works best for our car and fine tune it every night. It’s a whole different ballgame from what we’ve been doing the last three seasons”
Edwards team will keep a separate car to tour with when the Sunset schedule allows, with each piece being setup for its specific purpose.
“The plan is for us to have one car for Sunset and another car to tour with,” explains the former Limited Late Model racer. “We want to our Sunset tires separate from our tour tires, because both divisions have a pretty strict tire rule”
Edwards is likely to fit right into championship contention at Sunset, along with fellow OSCAAR Tour expat Andy Kamrath in what is quickly becoming a talent-heavy inaugural season for Sunset’s Modified division.
“The rule package and the longer races are going to make for a pretty level playing field for the whole roster,” says Edwards. “I don’t think you can ever count Andy (Kamrath) out. He’s the one to beat. But, I have a lot of faith in our equipment and our team. I’m excited to race at Sunset regularly and see what we can to when it comes to contending for a championship.”
TJ Edwards’ 2023 Sunset Speedway campaign will be powered by Candue Homes, Just Foam It, Young’s Home Hardware, JT Excavating, Theakers Collision, Donna Marie Davidson Re/Max, Sign Needs, Wellington Perforated Plate & Steel, Stewart’s Farm Equipment and EPIC Racewear.
