Sunset Speedway Announces Choose Cone Rule for all NASCAR Modified Events in 2023

Sunset Speedway > Sunset News > Sunset Speedway Announces Choose Cone Rule for all NASCAR Modified Events in 2023

INNISFIL, ON – Sunset Speedway promoter Brian Todish has announced a plan to help the brand new Seaton Structures NASCAR Modifieds stand out from any other division on the 2023 schedule.

For all NASCAR Modified events in 2023, drivers will be given the option to restart on the bottom or the top of the track, as opposed to the traditional double-file restart.

The choose cone rule has never been utilized at Sunset, and Todish sees the new division as the perfect chance to implement the brand new restart procedure.

“The Modified division is going to be something completely different from anything else on our schedule – and we wanted to give them a little something to help their races stand apart from everyone else,” explains Todish.

“We’ve been focused on making 2023 the best season we’ve ever had and this is just another way to make that happen. The ‘choose cone’ rule can change the complexion of a race in a heartbeat on a restart. This rule is going to ensure that a driver is never fully out of a race. If you’re running in the back when a caution comes out and choose to restart on the outside, you have a chance of picking up a number of positions in a short amount of time”

The choose cone will, undoubtedly, add an extra layer of strategy for any driver outside of the lead on a restart. Which will, in turn, keep each one of our NASCAR Modified events engaging right to the checkered flag.

“Any driver I’ve spoken to about this is excited because it puts another layer of control back in their hands,” offers Todish. “You can put your car wherever you feel it’s working best. If you’re deep in the field but think your car is dominant on the top – you can line up out there for a shorter run to the front of the field. It’ll make sure that every restart looks a little bit different, that’s for sure”

And, while the choose cone rule will start out as exclusive to the Seaton Structures NASCAR Modified division, driver and fan feedback will help to determine if it’s implemented for other divisions in 2024.

Fans will have their first chance to see the choose cone in action when the NASCAR Modifieds roll into Opening Night on Saturday, May 6th alongside the GD Coates NASCAR Pro Late Models, St Onge Recreation NASCAR Super Stocks, Struyk Energy Mini Stocks, Control Panel Systems Junior Late Models and the Canadian Legend Car Series.
